What's IFSC Code?
Indian Financial System Code (IFSC) is a 11 digit code provided by RBI (Reserve Bank of India) for identifying individual bank branch in India. It is used for electronic payment applications like Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) and Centralised Funds Management System (CFMS).The code is of 11 characters. The first part is the first 4 alphabet characters representing the Bank. Next character is 0(zero), this is reserved for future use. The branch code is the last six characters.IFSC is used by the NEFT system to route the messages to the destination banks / branches.
Bank-wise list of IFSCs is available with all the bank-branches participating in NEFT. List of bank-branches participating in NEFT and their IFSCs is available on the website of Reserve Bank of India . All the banks have also been advised to print the IFSC of the branch on cheques issued by branches to their customers. For net banking customers many banks have enabled online search / pop-up of the IFSC of the destination bank branch.
